Find answers to common questions about choosing a martial arts style, and learn what Stretch & Dumbbell can help with.
What this site helps with
This site walks you through four questions to help match you with a martial arts style that fits your fitness level, your goals, your age, and your experience. The style chooser then recommends which approach might suit you, along with a runner-up alternative.
Start with the style chooser on the services page—it asks just four questions and takes a few minutes. Once you have a recommendation, the referrals page shows you how to find a school near you, what to ask when you call, and what to expect on your first class.
The chooser and the referral steps are the two tools this site offers when you're deciding which style to try.
Common questions about choosing a style
What questions does the style chooser ask?
The chooser walks through four topics: your current fitness level, what you're hoping to get from a class, your age, and whether you've trained in martial arts before. After you answer them, it recommends the style that best matches your answers, plus a runner-up option.
Can you book a class for me?
No. We can't book classes, manage waitlists, or sign you up. Contact a school directly. We recommend finding one through referral—ask friends, your child's school, or your doctor who they would recommend. Then call or visit the school's website to ask about a trial class.
Can you give medical advice?
No. If you have an injury or a health concern, ask the school about adapting a class and speak with your own doctor. We can say what a typical class covers, but we cannot tell you whether a martial arts class is right for your body or your condition.
What we can't do
This site doesn't book classes, give medical advice, or speak for any school. We point you to resources and to schools that teach the styles we compare. You choose who to call.
